So this is where you been hanging out
I see lots of familiar names from the stompbox forum. I sort of went thru the whole pup deal before I decided I was using so much distortion that you couldn't tell which pup I was using. There are a bunch of folks on the Seymour Duncan Forum that need to read some of this stuff. I always got shot down for implying there was science involved in pup making, rather than magic.

Hey bro, I'm not sure who it was that was shooting you down, but it is science.

Magnets, wire, plastic, metal and you combine them just so and you get a nice pup.

You might be confused with the entire concept of "mojo". Some guitars, and some pups, have it. It's an individual thing. But it's not magic.

Old Seth Lover didn't wave his magic wand and come up with the humbucker. It was tried and true scientific methodology, hammering out some real clunkers until he got it right.

Sounds like you got a chip on your shoulder. But you're certainly welcome to post ad infinitum at the Duncan board. ;)

If you insist on rationally discussing articles of faith and self-delusion, you can only expect a shit storm. Since you were posting among consumers, not builders, their hostility is understandable. All they know is the advertising hype.

Next time, do not "imply" a scientific component -- SHOUT LOUDLY!!

No science = no pickups.
No art = no good-sounding pickups.
No magic = no rare great pickups.

Anyone can wind _one_ good-sounding pickup after they get the technique down, but few can (or will) do it consistently. There's a lot of persistence, some luck, a little magic, and as much science as you would care to look for.

The science part helps you figure out what you did right and stops you from doing dumb stuff like using brass for pole pieces.

I got a little frustrated with it. I guess it shows. Everyone was nicely tolerant to my ignorance though.
