What if we succeed?

What if we succeed?
Let's suppose that one of us finds a plastics molder who already has molds for pickup bobbins.

What kind of bobbins will we ask for:
humbuckers, single coil, P90, or whatever we can get?

If a bobbin production run is $1000 minimum, can we get organized enough to pool our money?

If it's $5000 minimum, are we as locked out as ever?

Expected answers: "whatever we can get, no, and yes."

Probably won't happen, because the injection moulds will be propriatary to whatever pickup company owns them...
Example: When I first found the people who cut our fibre bobbins, although he cuts bobbins for other companies, we could not use thier patterns for cutting our bobbins...we had to make our own pattern.

Personally, I would like to see us organised enough to pool for a set of bobbin moulds in original PAF specs, and a stamp and die for stamping HB base plates.

I think you're expected answers are close, but there is a significant issue. Most are not going to want strat and tele bobbins. Some don't like to work with them; Either way, the customers don't want to see them. Plastic singlecoil bobbins are automaticly considered junk/cheap...
Wolfe, it's a nice idea, but largely a pipe-dream. We would have to organize officially, and the organization would have to make the purchase. Then who owns the stuff if the organization disolves? After the molds/dies were made, then we'd have to somehow create a supply so that parts could be purchased in quantity desired at time desired. It is possible, but who manages such a thing? We've been there when we wanted to make a "group order" but no-one else in the group wanted to order at that time due to funds or existing supply/demand, or one needs to re-order sooner due to thier current demand....

Yeah, it's a pipe dream, but hey, I can dream! :)
Good point on who would own the moulds if we dissolve. Management if it could get quite wierd.
Funds are another consideration. WHen we stated the current pool, I was all ready to go...then Jennifer decided she wanted to move and tie up most of my money...that issue is being worked on.
Anybody want to buy a Theramin? Squier P-Bass?

A friend at a mid-western plastics company has agreed to reverse engineer some bobbins and make recommendations on compositions and mold flow patterns. According to him, $10k is steep for just a mold, but rational for everything else that goes with it, whatever that may be.

As for mold flow analysis, GE Plastics will give you application software for free, but you must CAD up a 3D stereolithograph (STL) file for input. The sofware models the plastic flow and suggests plastics according to your molding, machinability, and durability requirements.

Haven't tried it yet. Will see if I can CAD up a bobbin using TurboCAD freeware.

Hmm...
I've got a great 3-D design of a HB bobbin in DXF, MAX, or IGS format.
If I can find them, they're on the way in Email.

Yow! Thanks!
Moss don't grow on you at all.

If we've got a DXF then it can be rendered in stereo STL for the mold flow program.
