Wire tension, s'mores ArmatureCoil inc. makes industrial coil winders and suggests a winding tension that is 50-80% of the wire maximum. See <http://www.armaturecoil.com/winders/PDFBin/tensionwirechart.pdf> These are the figures we are interested in: #42 - .049 lb. - 22 grams ~3/4 oz. #43 - .038 lb. - 17 grams ~2/3 oz #44 - .023 lb. - 10 grams ~1/3 oz. Azonics makes an industrial-grade mechanical tensioner priced at $217, something unusual when the swiss Meteor 484 (apparently an industry standard) goes for $400 used and $600 new. If this kind of tension control is what you want, talk to Claire at Azonics. She seems a very nice sort. <http://www.azonicproducts.com/30-40.htm> To keep spooled wire from falling into piles or tangling as you pay it out, the $4 "Wisker Disk" is available. Check out the picture. It's a cardboard disk with bristles around the edge. You could easily make your own. <http://www.azonicproducts.com/wisker.html> -drh -- |

Glad I could help. What do you think of SK's wood lathe conversion into a pickup winder? I'm impressed as hell. <http://mywebpages.comcast.net/skgs/sk/winder2.htm> I suspect he shortened the bed on this one: <http://www.grizzly.com/products/item.cfm?Product_ID=14936&&User_ID=2096554&St=8130&St2=83221429&St3=-78151815&DS_ID=1> Harbor Freight's $139 wood lathe looked promising but it didn't have enough variable speed range. <http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=41648> I believe that both wood lathes have a standard 3/4" by 16 threads/inch shaft. This means you can fit a standard lathe faceplate on it if you don't want to cut & true up your own hardboard faceplate. Sears Craftsman has a 4" diameter faceplate for $20 (search on "lathe faceplate" at sears.com). -drh -- | |

yea I was looking for the links to it, but coulnd't find it. I'm impressed as hell too! Nice job SK! NOw, for the live center on the lath, I recommend making another face plate that have a few rows of holes in it (say, Strat, Tele , etc spacings) That way, you can have a nice clamping unit to hold the bobbins parallel no matter how tight you wind (no more flair! wooho!) I have a bunch of metal plates to match the bobbin tops that the live center sets to. Some have recesses for alnico polepieces, some have filluster screw heads to go into the bobbin. Works well and it's more adaptable/quicker. I considered a "fit all" faceplate, but it resluts in too much play which can damage the magnets/bobbins. |
