Alnico on the net!
I just did a search for alnico on the net and came up with some interesting stuff.Most of it was industrial technicians stuff with charts defining all sorts of grades of the stuff but I found some slugs at 6 x 12 and 6 x20 as well as bars at 60 x 15 x 5 (all in mm)in australia,close to me in New Zealand,at 2.20,2.40 and 7.26,australian dollars which seems very reasonable.The US dollar is worth about 1.50-1.60 so they may be a good option for you guys.

I have purchased from Magnet Sales and phoned some of the others. They usually like an order to top $50, but a couple of them are flexible. They can't list all their stock on the web, so call and ask. The worst they can do is say "no."

Magnet vendor links
Several dozen USA links to magnet vendors:

Worldwide links:

Dexter Magnetics sells Alnico 5 bars good for humbucking pickups.
<http://www.dextermag.com/pmp.htm>

Their bar #9744 is sized .125" x .500" x 2.50" and is magnetized across the .500" width. Prices start at $8 each in small quantity with the minimum order of $50, although you may be able to talk the salesman down some if you are up front about your experimental purposes and small order.

MagnetSource sells Alnico 5 rod 3/16" dia. x 5/8" (.187" x .625") for $0.83 each with a $30 minimum. That's 37 pole pieces or just over six strat pickups. You must download their .pdf catalog to find the phone number and part descriptions.
