Bobbins for blades Being lazier than average, I don't enjoy making my own bobbins for blade pickups. Is there a better way to make the bobbin flats than to drill two holes and route a straight groove between them? Being only slightly foolhardy, I think using a drill press like a pin router is outright dangerous but I haven't lost any fleshy bits. Not yet. Does anyone know where to buy plastic bobbins for blade pickups? The usual suspects (Allparts, Stewmac) don't have them. -drh -- |

There is a white plastic channeling that I've seen at every model train and hobby store I've ever been at. It can be gotten in a number of different dimensions. I picked up some and found you can make a blade-type bobbin by putting two pieces back to back around the blade polepiece. Of course you have to glue them on and have to shape and smooth the ends, but you *can* make 2 such coils in the width of a SC slot. |

I've heard you can use the metal plies from amp transformers too. |

| R.G. | Why wouldn't you pour a thin layer of casting resin into a routed depression and stick the blade into it until the resin hardened? It seems like pouring hardening gook into molds is easier than routing. R.G. |

| JULIO | COULDNT YOU ALSO TRACE OUT SEVERAL BLADES AT ONCE ONTO WHATEVER MATERIAL YOU ARE USING. THEN ROUT THE SLOTS WITH A PLUNGE ROUTER. THEN FINALLY CUT OUT THE BLADES.IT SEEMS LIKE A LARGE PIECE OF MATERIAL WOULD BE SAFER TO HANDLE |

Thanks, Julio. Sounds like a good idea and safer, too. Since the pickup blade fit a 1/16" wide slot, I'd need a 1/16" "veining" bit (inexpensive). That little Makita plunge router is on sale for only $100, so I could ruin...uh...slot *LOTS* of Forbon sheeting with it. According to Jason Lollar, routing Forbon is easy and leaves a smooth surface that needs little finishing. -drh -- |
