Anyone tried Kent Armstrong humbuckers? I've got some of the h/b sized P90's in my PRS McCarty that I'm very pleased with (especially considering the price), and I want to swap the SD Jeff Beck humbucker in my Hamer Archtop to something a little more subtle. Kent Armstrong / WD Music do a 'Vintage style' humbucker (http://www.wdmusicproducts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=WMPI&Product_Code=VINTAGE+O&Category_Code=PUHMBCKR) - any reports? | chris@1800instruments.com | I've sold a few to guitar makers here and they are really impressed with all the Kent Armstrong range, one maker has now switched from Seymour Duncans as standard equipment to Kent Armstrongs. Hes especially likes the P90 in a humbucker size, says they are much better than the Gison units hes tried. He makes Mosrite copies by the way. |

Is that the guy who makes 'Wosrite's? |

Thanks Chris. Like I said, I'm very happy with the h/b sized P90's - I can't really comment on how accurate a P90 sound they produce, but they are good sounding units. I'm after some replacement humbuckers really - I would just try some Duncans, but over here they are pretty expensive - the Kent Armstrongs are about half the price of the regular production Duncans. I've tried 2 Kent HBs last year, a Vintage C and a JB-style (now called HotRod Vintage), both with chrome covers (not nickel). Not bad sounding, the HotRod is close to a JB. The Vintage C wasn't too bad either. For sure, the thicker chrome covers didn't help in terms of clarity... I switched to Duncans and prefer them. Kent Armstrong pickups are made by SKY pickups in Korea. Probably a "generic" pickup manufacturer. |

Thanks for the feedback Sacha. I expect I'll end up with another '59 to match the neck pickup. I adore the '59 at the neck, but the JB just isn't very subtle, and it doesn't do much in the way of clean sounds. I'm looking for something lower powered, with less upper-mids and more bass. I still can't get over the price of the Kent Armstrongs though - my local distributor has promised a full refund if I want to try them. They're about half the price of the UK Duncan prices. Paul |
