Q Ratio... What does it mean to you!!! Guys I just thought I would post this to get everyones view on Q ratio... do you use it or don't you, etc. What formula do you use if you do and essentially what does it mean to you personally.... Tone |

I don't use it, but I'm looking at upgrading my LCR meter to one that will measure "Q". What I'll use that information for I'm not sure.... |

Its interesting as Fender use their own formula, or used to, based on a constant frequency... Q=6.28FL:R F=Contant Frequency of 1000Hz L=Inductance R=Resistance Tone |

What kind of LCR meter are you using now? I tried an older B&K to measure coil self-capacitance once but got screwy readings, indicating either too high or shorted. Don't know if its batteries were good but it put me off of them. The test equipment has improved a lot in the last 10 years, so there's got to be an okay LCR/impedance meter out there for under $200. Suggestions? -drh -- |

Chris Q is a measure if you like of the efficiency of the coil. A high Q as in a P90 gives a narrower frequency band where as a lower Q, ie Strat gives a more balanced frequency band... Cheers Tone |
