Is the war "over" already?
Just got back from a week in Death Valley (no phone, no TV – just great hiking & beautiful scenery) and Iraq seems to have dissappeared. Did "we" "win" or just get tired of it?

Yes, we won handily, with no embarrassing bloody quagmire, much to the chagrin of the anti-war crowd, who seem to have gone into a kind of sulking funk lately.

By the way, why the sarcastic quotes around "we" and "won"? Is it so hard for you to acknowledge the simple truth that we have won?

"We" because the "coalition" was and is a crock of shit. "Won" because there is no simple truth – you and I both know that it ain't anywhere near over if the job's going to be done anywhere near right (in terms of both the country of Iraq and the problem of international terrorism).

The "anti-war crowd" didn't need a "bloody quagmire" to justify being anti-war, you know. Personally, I tend to think of myself as anti-vigilante, and I am certainly thankful that there'll be a lot less killing going on (for a while, at least).

Thousands of dead and horribly injured Iraqi civilians is a "a bloody quagmire" It happened, but the western media didn't bother to talk about it much, except for the one poor boy they decided to make the poster child of how much the US cares. Meanwhile, there are still thousands suffering and getting no attention, but you'd think all is wonderful if you turn on CNN.

I saw an interview with a reporter just back from Iraq, who had done some reports for CNN. He stated that he had been told to be less graphic by CNN when he described a burning Iraqi tank with corpses hanging out the ports. TV war is just so neat and clean. Didn't take long for the Iraqi citizens to start yelling for the Americans to get out. No power or water for weeks now, and raw sewage running in the streets. I think in the long run they'll be better off than they were, but we sure aren't doing a very good job of helping through the tough times.

Just goes to show how how badly the news media have been co-opted by big biz and cowed by the ultraconservative "America can do no wrong" big mouths. It wasn't like that in Vietnam...

Anonymous,
You obviously live in Iraq to know this information, correct? Or is it you have that secret news source that only anti-war liberals are allowed to watch?
