Re: Serious question for non-denom Christians
And Joe, what makes the Paul conversion so wild to me was the fact that Paul (by historical accounts) was an intellectual among intellectuals. That's why he was so appealing to the Romans of the day. A man who was steeped in the law yet has a supernatural conversion to a belief system that he hated with all his being. God does operate mysteriously.

You raise a good question:

"Does the *truth* of the resurection of Christ have any bearing on your faith?"

The answer for me is NO. The Bible has thousands of words that provide guidance and a means of putting one's self in communion with God. The ressurection is only one part of the message.

Believing is an issue of faith, which provides for transcendence as well as for miracles. I've seen miracles in my own life directly related to divine intervention as a result of believing. I no longer concentrate on trivia such as questioning the accuracy of various biblical events. In the big picture, rigorous scientific proof is not that important.

To come into contact with God's love, all you have to do is ask. It's that simple. Questioning, arguing, and demanding proof is the more difficult route. It seems that many of those that always question oftentimes never seem to be satisfied with their conclusion that God does not exist. Could this suggest that the truth goes beyond simple human reasoning? Perhaps.

For me, it's pretty much irrelevant whether the Resurrection did happen. What interests me is whether it's possible for such things to happen in general. In other words, whether the human being has an immortal soul, or is just a bunch of conditioned reactions arising from a bunch of chemicals.

There have been some very strange and scientifically documented stories of near-death experiences, where patients have seen and heard events in the operating theatre at times when they were clinically dead, and were able to describe them later when resuscitated. The bunch of chemicals model has no way of explaining this.

I think that the moral of the resurrection story (which personally I believe is true) is just this: an impressive demonstration that we are all more than just a bunch of chemicals.

Try a Google search for near death experience.

Yes stephen, you raise a very good point. I think I will do a search on "near death experience" to see what comes up.
