No, noone asked anything for the use of air space. That was rather because *your* government thought that US will continue to need Turkey in the long run. e.g. "Make sure that those guys do not think that just because they have rejected US troop deployment we think that we dont need them anymore and cause them to seek new allies such as China, Russia etc."
Get a map and have a look at. Turkey is surrounded by the Caucasus (oil!), Syria (terrorist), Iran (potential terror supporter + oil), Iraq (your ex-terrorist), Balkans (unstable), Russia (your ex-enemy). Then you'll get the idea.

During the cold war the alliance had a real meaning. It was against USSR because USSR was a common enemy.

I think Turkey takes that money because the Turkish government is in a paranoid mood about economy. "Dont want to be another Argentine" phobia.
In fact 1 billons dollars does not make much sense compared to a few hundred billon dollars of debt, but nevertheless that's a free market economy and markets do not have a brain. When US declares that it will help the Turkish economy the mood of the markets changes suddenly. The conclusion - that money is symbolic but has real psychological effects on the markets.

Exactly what I was getting at. No doubt any government elected by them will be better than Saddam, but I have to wonder to what extent the US and others, such as the UK will sit by. One other thing keeps bothering me too. I keep hearing that all this looting will be adding to "our" cost of rebuilding. However, as this campaign got underway, I kept hearing the term "coalition" forces. Does this mean that all these other countries were willing to help us wreck Iraq, but won't be there financially to rebuild?

Steve, In the end all of the looting will just make it more expensive to rebuild Iraq, so the looters are really stealing from the taxpayers of the U.S. and whatever other countries will be footing the bill.

Man here we go again, more added taxes to foot from us tax payers. Bush and the RICH get the oil and WE get the BIG FAT BILL! And the other countries will probably not pay for SHIT!

This shit is starting to really piss me off. Our Goverment needs to stop making US (The US tax payers) foot the DAMN BILL for every fucking thing they decide to do.

Maybe they should make France pay for all this, but they won't we will ultimitally have to pay out the nose or should I say "pay out the ass" for this war

I think most people realize that this war wasn't so much about threat of mass destruction as it was to get hold of the second largest oil deposits in this world! Really lets ya know where Bush's interests really were? For the rich of course.

Garth	I think the US tax payers can all sleep at night, safe in the knowledge that from day one the US made it abundantly clear that all rebuilding will be funded by Iraqi oil revenue,and boy will they pay.
