Interesting reactions...
Thirthy years ago: At 9/11 1973 the democracy of Chile was wiped away with the very strong help of the CIA. Many thousands of persons were killed or crippled.

On 9/11 2003: No reaction here at all about Chile.

On 9/11 2001: You all know. We all put down the soldering-irons for a couple of weeks...

At 9/11 2003 In Sweden, the Minister of foreign affairs Ms Anna Lindh was stabbed to death. No reaction here whatsoever.

And you wonder why the world hates the US?
It doesn't. In Europe every country is on speaking terms with the US.

Take care, and kindest regards from Bernt.

Bernt,

Being of partial Swedish descent, I'm interested, but a bit lost with your post. It's normally sad and awful when someone is murdered. I understand that the annual murder rate in Sweden is on a par with a Los Angeles weekend, so it's surprise for Swedes. In the US, people with jobs like hers, don't go about without bodyguards. The global village is a more dangerous place than Sweden has been on average, for the last 100 years. That's not going to change. I do understand that immigrants, EC, and Euro$ have stirred up some resentments and fears. The culture is under attack. There are always those who will strike first.

Chile is sadly, old news, so I don't see your point. Most of the fruit and flowers I get are from Chile now.

Bernt and Luijo,
I feel bad that something like that happened also. Watching the news, it's unapparent exactly why it happened, maybe political because of her stand on the Euro?
We Americans are not all calloused and insulated. We are getting tired. And, we are you. Everyone seems to hate America these days...without taking into account that we are the world's ancestors all mixed together. Sure, it ain't perfect. We have WAY too many murders, WAY too many abuses of our freedoms that are threatening them, and overall, for a country that is one of the most diverse ethnically and religiously in the world, it's a wonder we do as well as we do, even. There were and are a LOT of Americans trying to help oppressed people all over the world to rid themselves of murderers of their own people and tyrannical regimes. Why? Money? Could be. Control. Basically, I think we want to see people to govern themselves, so they can make decisions that are good for all, instead of just a few. (We need to get some of that back, ourselves). And, I am free to write this without having stormtroopers busting down my door. (Well, if Ashcroft had his way...)
I think my point is, we are not uncaring. We are weary. The only reason I saw the story on Anna Lindh is because I caught BBC World News. I think everyone here should catch it. It gives us another view of how people are perceiving us than our own newscasts.
I will agree that we APPEAR self-centered. And some foreign news sources are probably "fair and balanced" (oopps, can i say that?)..but if any of us get's ALL our perceptions of others entirely from our own domestic news sources, NONE of us gets the entire story, and sometimes, no story at all.
My condolensces to you for your loss Bernt. Please keep in mind not to paint everyone with the same brush. Although we have murder in the streets at the highest rate of any industrialized nation, we are still a bit shocked about recent events. We see terrorism on the news for the past decade or more, and, we feel bad, but what can we do? Now, we just have to protect ourselves. Maybe we got a little jaded. But now we know. Now we do something. Now we are preoccupied.
Take care,
Brad

Brad!
To keep it short: No, everybody does not hate America. Certainly not. Different views sometimes, yes, that's perfectly normal, but not hate. Anna Lindh, this short blonde lady from this small country of Sweden has criticized mr Bush on some aspects of the Iraq issue, and he listened.
A quote from your Colin Powell: "three things I like the most about Sweden: Volvo, ABBA and Anna".
Peace, take care and kindest regards:
Bernt.
End of story..

A late response - we have some Chilean musician friends who were, as they put it, "guests of Mr Pinochet", that nice gentleman put in by the CIA, who, shall we say, was not over cautious in his torture methods.

Having just come home from Peru, I wonder if the unrest that we witnessed could develop into something similar, aided by something US backed.

I would also say that some of the tourists we came accross from the US were some of the most biggoted, winging gits I have ever seen - I'm not generalising here, just reporting what I saw. Others were very nice folks indeed.

Perhaps trajedy is USA shaped?????
