If you ever heard his stuff, I'd say it's possible with a flat-pick (maybe) but I haven't heard it done quite like Merle.
He played with a thumbpick, and the index finger --although it sounds like he's using 'em all (that thumb was BUSY :) ). I saw him frequently on tv growing up in the 50's --hell of a picker. He was a big influence on Chet Atkins --who said he used all his fingers to do what Merle did with two.

I've always used a flatpick ever since I saw Jeff Beck play that style in the Yardbirds. Anyway I think it looks more "flash" to play with a flatpick!

Of course, he seldom uses them now. ;)

You're quite right Eric. He guested on the Jools Holland Show on BBC TV a couple of years ago, and played a snippet of At Chetkins style using bare thumb and fingers. Played the pants off everyone else in the show!

Hi

I just think Frank's explanation was far better than Guitarland's. I caught the essance much more clearly.

First Frank starts talking about mouse balls, and now he's talking about elephant testicles. Hmmmmmm, I'm not quit sure what to think.

You might not want to leave him alone in a room with your favorite pet or farm animal... [Just kidding, Frank! I understand that the judge dismissed all of the charges because the animals refused to testify against you... :D ]
