nabisko jazzmaster pickup questions
as soon as i get some pickup covers and a pickguard from warmoth, i'll be almost ready to put my guitar together.

i'm putting jazzmaster pickups in my strat.

the questions i have are: do these mount to the pickguard or the body? i think they mount to the pickguard... but if so, can i use the same screws and springs as a strat? or a standard screw i can use?

and while looking for parts i saw replacement pots for jazzmasters- 1 meg and 50k???

is this because of extra parts in the jm tone circuit or what?

i just want to wire them up with a three way switch (bridge/both/neck)

what pots and capacitor should i use?

also, what do you think of jazzmaster pickups in a strat? has anyone ever done or seen this before?

JZMaster Pups mount to the body. I'd use stardard value pots, 250 or 500K. Same with the caps, .05 is a good place to start.
I have a hardtail JZM body with the set up as you describe. It works great. The pups I was using were SD Antiquities. This was far and away the loudest Fender in my stable (Tele with Rios', Strat with Kinmans). I believe the original tone circuit sucked the life out of the pups.
ps I gave up on the duncans. They sounded great but the noise drove me nuts. I mounted some old Bartolini Mini Humbackers to the body and mounted the JZM cover over the top. I'm real happy with this set up, but it's not as loud as the duncans.

I agree with Paul... I have a 66 Jazzmaster and it sounds pretty good clean... nice and warm, but holy smokes start running some gain on the amp and all you hear is buzzzzzzzzz... The noisiest guitar I have ever owned and BTW it is completely shielded correctly too I might add... I tried runnning Seymore Duncan Hot picups...??? I think they are called... not the quarter pounders, but hotter than stock. Anyway, yes they mount to the body not the pickguard..

I don't even play that guitar any more because of the noise.... Ironically for a while I did the opposite of what you are considering doing.. I tried hiding a Strat pickup underneath the Jazzmaster pickup cover.... Sounded much better....

But I like Paul's idea of running a mini humbucker under there...hmmmmm... Maybe there is hope for this guitar yet...

nabisko warmoth says it won't work
ken at warmoth returned my email-

he says jazzmaster pickups are too wide for a strat and they can't make me a pickguard.

i've measured and as soon as i find covers for the pickups, i'll know for sure...

i'm gonna order a pickguard with no pickup holes and cut my own- they should fit if i angle them like a mustang!

i might have to carve out a few notches in the body to make them fit, but the pickguard should cover those. (it's got the universal square rout)

it should make for an interesting project if i can get the parts together and enough time to experiment with pot values.

The covers are about 1/4" longer than a strat pickup including the mounting tabs but the pole spacing is the same. It shouldnt be a problem if you are willing to modify, my guess is that for warmoth it is a problem, they dont want to vary from the norm.

Re: custom pickguard
Chandler should be more interested in your business than warmoth.
