VOX SuperBeatle Switch - Need
Hi. A friend of mine's got a VOX SuperBeatle that needs an on/off/standby switch. It's a three-pole, rotary switch. If anyone knows where I can locate something like this, I'd appreciate the information. (Note: We're checking Mouser, and Newark). Thanks for any and all help - Alan

Check with Steve at Angela Instruments.

Angela Instruments may have one, but I did find a Grayhill rotary switch rated at 5A at Digikey.

The problem with that switch is that it carries both line voltage and the speaker outputs. The speaker output on the Beatle can be up to 11A, and most rotary switches are only rated to maybe 1A.

I have a couple of Beatles that had similar problems. In one of them, I took the broken wafer switch and epoxied the pieces back together with some PCB-stock reinforcing slivers, and it's still working. In the other, I replaced the switch with a low-current unit that switches relays to do the heavy lifting.

If you're working inside his Beatle, go read "Bulletproofing Thomas Vox Products" at GEO -http://www.geofex.com. I have some other things you may want to include. First and foremost, opening that case up is a major undertaking, so do it all while you're in there. I'd suggest replacing all the electrolytic caps -- yes, every single one -- as a start. It's a pain, but then the amp will not be in for service in a few months. Next, do something about the heatsinking. The Beatle is always on the edge of heat death in the stock setup. At a minimum, make sure the screws holding the power transistors are firmly but not crushingly tight. The sheet metal screws can loosen up from thermal expansion fatigue. Read through the rest of the stuff and pick up some ideas.

Yell if you have more detailed questions. keen@-take-this-out-geofex.com.

Look up North Coast Music, they deal in Vox stuff and may have something.
