J Payant Effect of voltage on preamp tubes...Marshall
I look at old schematics and the dropping resistors are smaller, 8.2k instead of 20k in some cases. What does it do, more headroom and less fuzzy gain ?

I'm talking about the plate voltage on the preamp tubes... if you raise it, does it sound cleaner, less distorted ?

So is J Payant and "anonymous" the same person?

Anyway, looking over my stash of Marshall schem-o's I see that besides the '76 JMP 2204 (not the cascaded pre-amp 2204) all the preamp plate resistors are the same 100k (the '76 2204 had 330k on V2a), so then I thought maybe you mean the B+ dropping resistors as they feed the preamp sections, but these also are the same 10k/1w (50w) and 20k/3w (100w).

There was a thread a while back (subject: "best voltages for blues") that addressed preamp tube voltages check that out, Bruce in particular had some interesting observations.
