Resistors
Just wondering if there are any advantage to using carbon films verses carbon comps other than drift that cc's seem to exhibit over time? are there other differences how they reaction in a circuit?

Carbons are noisier (hiss) than equivalent-wattage metal films when used for plate resistors.

carbon comp resistors also exhibit a small amount of 2nd order harmonic distortion, as well as the other things mentioned.

Andy please explain,

"carbon comp resistors also exhibit a small amount of 2nd order harmonic distortion..."

Question, have YOU ever measured the distortion of a metal film vs. carbon comp using the same circuit under the same testing conditions? If not, are you just passing on ...what you heard? HMM? (another wives tale... ie BS)

Carbon comp resistors have lower inductance properties as compared to metal film ONLY in the resistor body region PERIOD! They also exhibit poor temperature stability compared to the metal film. So what, who cares?

I AM CONVINCED MOST OF YOU ON THIS WEBSITE ALL ARE NOT REAL PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS. A MAJORITY OF THE TONE YOU HEAR COING OUT OF YOUR AMPS IS DERIVED FROM EACH OF YOUR INDIVIDUAL PLAYING STYLES, ATTACK, AND PLAYING CAPABILITIES.

CASE IN POINT, HOUND DOG TAYOR GOT A GREAT SOUND WITH A CHEAP OUT OF TUNE TEISCO GUITAR AND A HARMONY AMP. Did he care or even know what a resistor was? Probably not, but he put his soul into his playing and that's what made him sound great, not his equipment.

RATHER THAN BITCH AND WHINE ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT YOU HAVE CARBON COMP OR METAL FILM IS POINTLESS.

YOUR SUBJECT MATTER AND A LOT OF OTHER POSTS ON THIS SITE ARE ANALOGOUS TO PARENTS WHO PUT THEIR KIDS IN A SOCCER LEAGUE. SINCE THEY CAN'T PLAY A REAL SPORT, THEY'RE PLACED INTO A SITUATION WHERE THEY ARE JUST KICKING AROUND A BALL, AND AT THE END OF THE SEASON, THEY ALL GET TROPHIES FOR THE WONDERFUL THINGS THEY DID. IT MAKE EVERYBODY FEEL BETTER, PARENTS KIDS, ETC, BUT IN REALITY NOTHING WAS EVER ACCOMPLISHED.

CASE IN POINT, IF YOU BUY A DUMBLE AND AN SRV STRAT YOU WON"T SOUND LIKE THE LATE GREAT SRV, YOU'LL ONLY USE THE AMP AND GUITAR FOR BRAGGING RIGHTS. AGAIN POINTLESS, BUT GO AHEAD IF IT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER, BECAUSE IT DOESN'T AND NEVER WILL IMPROVE YOUR PLAYING TALENT, AND THAT'S GOOD FOR ME BECAUSE IT KEEPS GEEKS LIKE YOU WHERE YOU BELONG; OFF OF THE STAGE.

suggestion to all, keep up the "good" work, and go buy a LINE 6 (SOCCER BALL) amp

Wow....
I believe a lot of tone comes from the player himself. That doesn't mean it's not worth trying to build or upgrade equipment. Putting an entire forum down is not productive, and in fact, is likely to minimize the impact of any point you wish to make. Nothing wrong with people wanting to learn how and why things work, and what effects certain components may have. If someone posts a questionable answer to a question, usually it is responded to in a civil way, and everybody benefits. I've seen a lot of "Urban Legends" dissected and put to rest in forums such as this. These guys are knowledgeable and professional enough to set things straight in a non-condescending manner, and everyone is lucky and grateful that they take time out of their day to share their knowledge.
Please use more tact in the future? I'd wager even a real tech could have a question at some point.

build the net, and they will come.. whew. ;)

Just one Q for all really: why/how is there any debate over fingers vs gear? I'll appologize ahead of time but it's got to be the dumbest argument going. If touch didn't matter we'd all have the same feel.. if gear didn't matter, we'd all have the same amp. Since I think it's safe to say the last two statements are false, the point is moot.
Innit? :)

Thank you
It is absolutely rediculous. I sound like myself no matter what amp I use, but a cathode biased EL84 amp sure sounds different than a BF 6L6 type circuit, even if it's me playing both amps.
