Compressor: Why? Guys, Why should a guy use a compressor? I hear that lots of local blues guys use them, but what effect do they have on tone/feel? Thanks. ~F |

it boosts your signal below one level, and cuts it above a higher level. it keeps the signal within certain boundaries basically. very useful for playing blues, as you can change from playing chords to lead without scrabbling for your volume control. boss also make one which doubles as a sustainer which sounds great. it really adds a lot of extra sensitivity to your sound believe it or not. peter |

| Sleebo_The_Beebo | A few reasons: 1. To get better feel when playing clean. Compressed clean plays easier. A little like having the natural compression of overdriven distortion, but clean. Without compression, many people find it harder to play clean than play distorted. 2. Better longer clean tone for playing legato. 3. Using a compressor is a great way to hit the sweet spot of a slightly overdriven amp better. |

thats a good point, my amp sounds a hell of a lot better when you put the preamp just before distortion when you play a barre chord. this is partly because the signal is being compressed and partly because of the harmonic distortion being added, but compression definitely makes clean sound better to me peter |

And like anything else, don't overdo it. |

they use them because they have no technique. i have labored hard and long to get my dynamic range up into the ~60dB area, and i'm not about to squish it all back down with some dumb box just because i can't control my fingers! jm2c ken |

"...and i'm not about to squish it all back down with some dumb box just because i can't control my fingers." That's a cool way to look at it. I was wondering how it changes the sound. You know, does it make it spankier, smoother, etc. I know how hard it is to assign words to tone. ~F |
