Re: Output transformers
Bob is right that transformer design texts reveal all on making your own, but they do not tell you what Fender did or what Marshall did. The text won't tell you how to duplicate something.

Well, if someone wants to share this info, or disasembled a Marshall OT, let me know and I can post drawings and instructions. Or any OT, that would be cool too. Why not? Everybody knows this or that amp circuit but there is nothing about OT. Am I missing something?

We have the same problem here in Holland as well .There are a few Transformer builders left and they certainly have no intention of sharing any information what so ever about making your own transormers. They won't even help in telling you where one can obtain the laminates or the copper wire.
There is one I requested for information several times but he doesn't even bother to respond. While he has read the mail. But if you request a transformer with your own specifications the respond very quickly. Apparently scared someone will take over his business. A bit silly since he is (in this case) about 50 years of experience ahead of me?!?!?!?

Not for nothing, but these marginally bitter posts crop up every couple months or so.. maybe we could do an FAQ?

1. Puh-Lease!! There is no conspiracy. folks that have worked hard to figure things out at their *own expense* are not obligated to give that away. That much should be obvious. I don't even ask Simcha for his secrets - and we work together!! Have some respect for the efforts of others, esp where it concerns their livlihood. Where someone has spent years learning the ins and outs, where do you or I get off demanding them? We need to earn them IMHO. These things are not calculated, they are the summation of years of experimentation, trial and error.

2. Finding suppliers is about as easy as getting off your couch and walking either to a phone or a PC and digging a little. ;) There are lots of lam mfrs and wire makers and cover stampers etc who would probably *love* to sell you materials - it's why they are in business after all!! :)
Do a google search, do two! Call your country's various trade organizations to look for suppliers. In the US, try the Thomas Register (they have it at the library..so it's free!) I bet you can find everything you need in one afternoon.

It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness, n'est pas?

Yeah, youīre right Speedracer.
What I mean is:

If I want to build a Plexi, I can find the circuit. Everybody has it. I have not to start course in electronics or buy a book and learn how tubes works, thought itīs better to know it.

I donīt want to build THE BEST output transformer. Everybody says yours is the best.

BUT, there is sow few in the net. Ok, there are some articles here and there, BUT Iīm a musician, I can not expend years and years in an OT and forget how to play the guitar.

I just want some basic instruction for an OT that works and start from there.

See it this way: I can NOT buy a Plexi or an OT, and I can NOT expend years in investigation. Itīs not THAT easy this side of the world. Maybe you can understand. I just want some shortcut.

Excuse my English

*I can not expend years and years in an OT and forget how to play the guitar.*

In previous decades, I had the same feelings.

So I waited until after I had forgotten how to play guitar before I started worrying about OT specifications. This does seem logical, I think you are on the correct path :)

there's a huge element of truth here. i've spent more time amp tweaking than playing. alot of it has been with a pencil and paper. in the past couple of years, i've spent more time looking at schematics, crunching numbers, and soldering than i have playing guitar! needless to say, my marginal playing skills didn't get any better...
