Don't forget to break it in.
I've read posts by a lot of people who believe that the Eminence speakers require breaking in. You might want to try searching AX84 for some recent discussions on the topic.

So, don't pass judgment right away. Play it for a while (or crank your stereo through it and go away for the weekend) then make up your mind.

Yeah they definitely need broken in. I've been playing through my v12's for about a year and the bass was a little "flubby" and boomy at first. Now the bass response seems a little more natural and transparent. Or maybe it just wore my ears out :)
Oh, and the mids are definitely less harsh after a year of playing. Just my $.02.

Wow, thanks for all the info fellas :) this info
really helps.

I have a 1x12 cab that I put the V12 in tonight that sounds good with the speaker in it.

It also really gives the SLO a more old marshall tone suprisingly. If the bass smooths out it would be a perfect speaker to me as its got old tone from the 70's sound to my ears.

I wonder what other good sounding but low cost speakers are out there.

I got this V12 from Avatar for $45.00 shipping included. Avatar seems to have good deals on speakers but they need a little more variety as its mostly celestion. Maybe Dave will add more in the future.

Dave has GB12's, V12's, and M12's in fours on ebay pretty regularly ( dave@avatarspeakers.com is his ebay name). Sometimes he even has a couple of the alnico 12's (122's?). I just got some m12's from him to put in my 4-12 cab. Dirt cheap too.

Cool, how do they sound and what are they modeled after? I think the V12 would go well with a Celestion 75t12 as they seem to compliment each other.
I sure wouldn't mind doing a 2x10 cab but Im not sure how these would stack up against the ussual 12" speaker sound Im used too.

I had a 2x10 fender cab years ago with a fender tremelux head that had a great tone but wasn't very loud but that can be a good thing.

I just got the m12's, so I haven't put them in my cab yet. I'll let you know what I think. FWIW, I read that they are cleaner and brighter than v12's.

I built a champ style EL84 amp with a jensen reissue p10r and it spanks. Way too loud to play in my apartment. Punchy and bright as hell. Quite a bit different sound than a 12", but not really any quieter. Different bass response (not as much bass anyway). And it cuts through the mix better than the v12, but that may be because it's in a combo and the v12's are in a sealed cab.

Nate, you da man.
Finally! Someone who owns both the V12 and the M12. Break those suckers in quick and tell us all how they compare. I need to buy a speaker for my 18-Watter SOON, and can't decide between the two.
