so what is the chip of choice to use in a 4558 based pedal like an 808? where can you get them for 22 cents apiece? im speaking of course about general consensus, not individual tastes. how can you buy a jrc4558d and know youre not being ripped off? is there a substitute out there that makes everyone happy?

Steve Daniels at Small Bear sells that parts number - I've just ordered a dozen (one for a TS808 plus some spares)

The NJM4558Ds sold by Mouser for 22 cents each are in fact JRC4558Ds, and are marked as such. And always have been. "NJM" is the new name of what used to be JRC (= "Japan Radio Corporation", but I forget what NJM stands for...)

There are eBay weenies :-) who will tell you that the "new" JRC4558Ds are "not as good" as the "old" JRC4558Ds, but I don't believe that and I don't know how you could possibly confirm that anyway. There's too many other variables involved.

Actually NJM is the part number prefix. A prefix that they have -always- used. NJR's numbering convention is as follows:

NJM.......Bipolar Monolithic IC
NJH.......Hybrid IC
NJD.......Diode & Transistor Array
NJU.......MOS IC

The 'D' is the package type.

If there is another letter after the 'D', it means the device has been screened for a certain characteristic.

People try to claim that when JRC became NJR, things changed. Well, the truth is, JRC became NJR back in the 50s, when they joined (were aquired by?)Raytheon. So the JRC4558 wasn't even in existance when this event occurred.

Personally, I can't tell the difference between the JRC4558D and the LM1458 that Radio Shack has...

...but the TL082 FET chip is better, IMO.

get them from mouser, 22 cents each, that's the only way to be sure you're not getting ripped off.
don't believe all the hype about the old chips, they don't sound any better than the ones that are currently available. (I am probably going to be flamed bigtime for saying that again)
FWIW, i have also used the 1458 chip that was mentioned, with decent results.
