Mike usually puts in a RC4558D, but I've heard people claiming to have found other chips in theirs. Use a socket and experiment; I've heard the TI chips are nice, too.

RObert Flat Mid mod?
my orange FD-II has a JRC 4558 chip

does anyone know what the flat mid option is?
I think it is the 220 ohm resistor on the middle of the tone pot, increased, is that all? I want to try this one on my orange FD-II, maybe add a trim pot to try it.

Hello RObert, the question you asked is what I want to know. I tried to mail to Sean kilback from his web sit but fault , maybe just because of my country shield. But you can try it.
If you know what's the exactly difference between the FD2 FM and FD2,please let me know ,thanks a lot!

I don't have an FD2 nor have I ever played one, but you might be able to use the mod I put on my web site for the TS-9 Flat Mids since I've heard the FD is similar to the TS.
