Re: Thanks and a question
As to the transformer question on the 5C5/5E5 Weber Chassis...
NO... it's a BF/SF Deluxe Reverb PT foot print.
The chassis is a stretched 5E3 chassis but with 6 octal sockets.
It was originally made for me by Weber to make a larger 2x10 cab version of a 5E3 and or 5C4 with, 5Y3/5U4, 6V6s/6L6s/KT66s and three 6SC7GTs, using a higher current Heyboer Deluxe Reverb power transformer Dave Allen now sells.
The cathodyne driver will juice 6L6s just fine but when having those chassis made, I opted for the paraphase/see-saw type driver, hence the reason for the extra tube socket.

Thanks, Bruce. You filled in several important blanks for me. One more remains for now: How does the width of the 5C5/5E5 chassis compare to a 5E7/5E5-A/5F4?

WeberVST tweed Fender chassis:
5C5/5E5 17.5" with Deluxe Reverb PT size punch out.
5E7/5F4 18.5" with larger Vibrolux/Super PT punch outs.
As ar as all my tweed amp kits go, Heyboer, Marvel and Lenco is making all these power, output trannys and chokes for me, although I still have a dozen Hammond 158Q 5Hy@150ma chokes left.

Re: Thanks and a question
Bob,

The best way I can answer your question would be to say that the 6L6 version is incredibly close to the the 6V6 version, only louder. It's kinda hard to compare though because IMHO a 6V6 has a sweeter harmonic character than a 6L6.

I would say that if your ear can hear the difference between RCA Black plates, and Military Philips 6V6's, and you cant live with anything but the RCA's, then the 6L6 solution is NOT for you.
(does this make sense?)

Ohh geeez....to answer your question....yes the preamp is enough to drive the power tubes.

Dont forget that I am also using higher voltages that a tradition "tweed". The plates are at about 430V

As a reference
Volume 0-1: the amp is pretty clean and volume increase is noticeable
Volume 1-2: the amp begins to "Break Up" and volume increase is still noticeable
Volume 2-3: the amp begins to really "drive" and the volume increase is still noticeable
Volume 3-5: the amp gets really "ballsy" and compression starts to set in. This is about as loud as the amp will get.
Volume 5-12: Chose your level of distortion/compression.

Hope this helps.
