High power, low break up speaker I see plenty of commentary on the low-power and AlNiCo speakers, but what about some discussion on the higher power speakers, applied to reduce the amount of early breakup and improve headroom, or for use with humbuckers? I had a Weber CCA12 that is supposed to be like a JBL120F. It seems to me it would have not broken up, but maybe would have been too sterile sounding. I saw some people mentioning ceramic Celestions, also, but I have never really liked any ceramic Celestions I have played with. Would two P12Qs give better headroom and fuller tone than one? Would this help to accomplish the same results, meaning more headroom and tighter low end? Just curious. |

| Owen | I have a Mojotone Black Beauty 12 in my Deluxe clone. I believe it is the 100 watt version, as it doesn't have the Jensen type basket. It is a very loud and clean speaker, not really breaking up at all really - at least until the volume and tone are on nine and you are hitting the guitar hard. The clean and distorted sounds are great, but it is the clean sounds that are really nice - I think it has more color than a Weber California, which is another speaker I was considering. I'm not a major proponent of the Mojo thing - I just think it sounds MUCH better than I thought - at least as good as Weber and Jensen in quality of construction and tone. My amp sounds big and bright and focused, even with flatwounds. But it does not sounds like a little, midrangey Deluxe with that suggestion of a bottom end. It sounds like a twin, which is at times a good thing, though I think in a band situation, it may be hard to get that "Deluxe" sound. It kind of has that Standel clean, not Fender raunch. I'm going to buy another c12Q for raunch - tried all the rest. |

hi nate! a pair of p12qīs will get you a fuller sound with (slightly) more headroom, but i still think a more efficient speaker will give you more of both. i use a celestion g12h30 in my 5E3-clone for that very reason and i can highly recommend it! the amp is very loud with tons of bass-response. you can hear it on the song "duesenjaeger" at our bandīs page http://seaside-music.de. some other options that come to my mind are the jensen c12k (i quite like it), the jensen p12n, the celestion "blue" (pretty big bucks) or some of weberīs offerings. hope this helps cheers - C. |
