Re: master volume on 5e3 homebrew..?
well, I can't speak from the experience of having tried the MV in a 5E3, but I do find a lot of range in the interaction of the two volume controls
(see remarks in the string regarding "volume drop")

MV seems like it would be a little "redundant all over again" :-)

I do agree, though, that some situations might call for different solutions - some of my neighbors probably wish I had an MV on "1", on ALL my amps!!

Oh no !
Bruce gonna jump in to tell not to use MVs in Deluxes ......... :) LOL but

If you do need a mv in a 5E3 the best thing you can do imho is replace the 220k biassplitters with a 250k dual ganged mastervolume-control . When the control is dimed the circuit is like stock and when lowered you get the sound of the driver/splitter od .

Don't forget that if the amp is pretty "farty" you also hear that when lowering the mv-control .

Have fun building , tweaking & playing !

Chris-
So, you're saying just leave the .1's alone?
Replace the 220K's with the daul-ganged pot?
No other alterations?
I used a single pot in the same way to add a MV to a 5F2 circuit.
I think I also added a 1k grid resistor going to the power tube pin 5.
Does this method alter the frequency response at all?
Also, I tried the 5F2 with the pot wired as a variable resistor (2 legs) and as a pot (3 legs).
Went with the pot wiring.
Do you have any opinions about this?
Thanks.

Hi Ed

I always use smaller coupling-caps before and after V2 in a 5E3 style amp BUT that's a personal/customer taste .
The cool thing about the post-pi-mv or the single pot in your 5F2 is that it's like stock when dimed so even when you're not using it , it doesn't do no harm .

It does effect the sound a bit when lowering that control , also because you're lowring the overall volume and that does effect how you experience the sound . The post-pi-mv in a tweaked 5E3 does give that clean/dirty sound at lower volume levels imho . The PI / driver / splitter does have a major impact on the sound in most amps .

I really don't like the var.res.wiring ( like the ones used in Matchless amps ) , it does sound wayyy buzzy/fuzzy at lower volume-settings . When you lower the resistance you do load the PI way more .

Hope this does help and please don't forget it's all imho :)

have fun building & tweaking ,

Chris-
Does Matchless wire any of their post-PI MV's directly in the signal path?
I did a Spitfire & it uses a single pot across the 2 input wires to cancel out some of the signal between the 2 tubes.

Ed ,

Afik they don't ( not like a dual ganged mv ) .
Just use the mv you like !

Have a nice weekend ,

Chris
