5E3-sound??? hi guys! let me start out by saying that YOU all got me wanting a tweed deluxe in the first place i was looking at bruceīs kit myself, but as i live overseas, it got rather unreasonable (pricewise) after adding shipping expenses, import-taxes and the like... BUT - i then stumbled upon a deal for a victoria-deluxe! these have quite a good reputation and are probably built better than i could have possibly done it myself - and it was only a bit more money than the kit/shipping etc. would have cost me! well, i had to buy it online, without playing/hearing it first... but now for the hard part... the amp is in clean/immaculate condition, with all nos-tubes and stuff - but it doesnīt sound as good as i hoped it would... the clean sound is great, and itīs plenty loud enough, and i very much dig the "character" of the amp. warm, woody, sparkly - without being harsh...BUT - the overdrive is really nothing to write home about ;( i havnīt got around to try it with different speakers yet, though. it came with a jensen c12n ri - and i understand that this is victoriaīs usual choice for this amp, but the ampīs od through this speaker is NOT stellar at all! it has an annoying top-end "edge" to it that i canīt seem to dial out... do you all think itīs the speaker that doesnīt compliment the amp?... do you think iīve got a lemon?...or did i just expect too much from the 5E3? i was really hoping for some nice od-tones from an amp like this! sorry for the long rant, and thank you for reading (if you made it this far...). any of your comments/insights are greatly appreciated! carsten |

For what its worth, I have A/Bed the two amps and I will take Bruce's kit every time. The other people with me at the time agreed. |

| Kevin | Carsten, Maybe you could post a sound clip of what you are referring to. Some of us could listen and compare the sound to ours. Tone is so subjective. |

Hi Carsten, You can go to Sean Kilback's site and check out some of his sound clips of the 5E3. http://www.kilback.net/homebrewtweaks/amps/amps.htm#tweed5e3 It gives you an idea what you might expect from a Tweed Deluxe, but as is mentioned elsewhere here, guitar type, speaker type, tubes, cab, etc, all play a part in the overall sound. Some of the other builders also have sound clips available. As to your OD problem, have you tried switching speakers at all? I pulled speakers out of all my amps and tried them with the 5E3 until I had an idea which sounded best to my ear. Hope that helps. Mike |

hi guys! thanks for your thoughts and encouragement (and the link, too!)! sorry, i donīt have the proper tools to get sound-samples (but iīm working on it...). however - i had some spare time yesterday and spent it in the rehearsal-space trying to get that straight! i tried the amp with several different speakers - and iīm glad i can tell you that it seems healthy, strong and GREAT sounding - just not with the c12n thatīs in there ;( it has a very good/great clean-sound - but it s§$%s for od...maybe itīs not "broken in" properly por whatever, but iīll get rid of it anyway. i tried the 5E3 side-by-side with a brown deluxe (6G3) with a celestion greenback (swapping the speaker-cables to and fro), and both amps sounded great with the greenback (and both ampīs od sucked with the c12n...) - i even thought the victoria sounded nicer, as it has more bass-response (i like that!). the greenback is not the greatest speaker for clean-sounds - in that it breaks up rather early - but i was very pleased with how it sounded no matter what i threw at it (fulldrive2), or how high the volumes and tone were set. now, i have a g12h30 on order, and i suspect that iīll be a happy camper once it has arrived thanks again + iīll keep you posted carsten p.s.: i listened to the sound-samples! CRUNCH is what iīm after! |
