Does anybody know why Fender didn't use the 12AX7 for the first stage and the 12AY7 for the second stage and splitter?

The 12AY7 is an Asymetric Duo triode and works better with the phase splitter as well as it's reduced mu to smooth it out.,

KB, I don't get what you're saying. In particular, what is asymmetric about a 12AY7?

My question arises because I think in any amp its better noise-wise to have the maximum gain in the first stage and the largest possible signal in the tone section. Also in the same splitter circuit, a 12AY7 has more headroom than a 12AX7.

I can't imagine why Fender has it backwards in the 5E3. Switching the tubes doesn't materially change the sound of the amp (which is largely about the power stage and speaker)... but its still curious.
