| patrick | Re: OZZFEST 2000 BOGUS... I agree with you, and it seems most of those who replied, and am glad to know I'm not the only one who notices. My complaint about most contemporary rock is that is lacks any articulte guitar lines, melodic content, and for the most part current "rock" music has an unfocused, angry tone. It isn't something that you want to hum along with as you go about the daily grind, or drive your car. It does not take much talent to hammer out a few cords. When is the last time you heard something contemporary like the Allman's classic "Jessica"? I've heard it for years, can play a good part of it, and it still makes me smile when I hear it on the radio. It makes me feel good. Limp Bizkit does not make me feel good. Just another old fart with my two cents worth |

Because Patrick, a large component of modern music's popularity will always be "piss off the straights". Whether we want to admit it or not, we responded to the same ingrediant in the music of our teenage and later years. The good thing about that music is that it did still have musicianship where now it has been distilled down to almost pure emotion. It will probably get worse ..Joe L |

There's been absolutely shed loads of articulate, well-played, intelligent and musical rock in the last five years. Trouble is it doesn't sell very well, so you won't get to hear too much of it on the radio/TV/MTV (at least not here in the UK). As far as I can work out Bivouac, Nilon Bombers, Addict, Summercamp, etc. etc. all disappeared due to lack of interest. None of these were particularly "piss off the straights", but maybe you were so busy moaning about how it's not like it used to be that you forgot to get your arse down to the record shop and see if there was anything good about. It will get worse - so why not do something about it and support the good stuff? There are actually competent bands out there, but they haven't got much of an audience anymore. Liam |

| patrick | You have a good point Liam. The stuff I do manage to find that I like does not get airplay. One fellow in particular I came across about 2 years ago is Walter Trout. He is somewhere between Gary Moore and Carlos Santana. Your point is well made. |

You guys remember back in the day when the only rap you ever heard was Aerosmith / Run DMC's "Walk This Way" or occasionally some Beastie Boys? I think there is a big element of market demographics going on in todays music - Parents hate new music - kids like to piss off parents - kids spend parents money on music parents hate Where did I read that the age group from 11-17 buys more records than all the others combined? Part of the problems with "good music" is that it does not appeal, by and large, to the underage crowd. As we get older we get more sedentary in many ways including our musical tastes. We learn what we like the best and stick with it. I do not care for Korn or Limp Bizkit and many of their contemporaries but I am glad that they have channeled their creative energies into music as opposed to violent crime! Santana had the RIGHT idea with "Supernatural" - team up with some artists that the kids can get into, such as Rob Thomas or Everlast. Plus throw in some killer guitar stuff that their old Dads can appreciate and you have an album that crosses demographic barriers. Record comanies DREAM of having a "Supernatural," or a "Thriller," or a "CoolyHighHarmony" for that matter. I personally bought 6 copies of Thriller! How sick is that? Really. That said, I do enjoy cranking up a good amp and rocking out with my band. Pharaoh |

Hi Fellow Ampagers, FWIW IMO one of the problems with music today is that there is not a great deal of really exciting stuff out there at the moment, its all very formulated, so as to not alienate anyone, generate money etc. I like listening to stuff where you dont know whats going to happen, say like a musical ride or something.Whether it be slow or heavy or whatever,as long as it dont have all that turntable scratching, that gives me the shits. A while ago I saw a film clip of an English(i think) band(i think Liam, Bivouac are awesome,Its a shame you dont hear from them anymore.I've got both of thier albums and they ROCK. Its probably the way the music scene is in the UK that brought about their demise, all that dance stuff and wussy brit-pop you have to put up with.At least there is still Swervedriver. Matt |
