Soldering to Pickup Windings How's it done? How do you remove the enamel from the copper & how do you prepare it for soldering? Please Help! Paul D. |

Use a small piece of folded sandpaper to remove the insulation from the wire; fold the sandpaper with the grit inside and then carefully pull the wire through the sandpaper several times. Practice a lot though, if you pinch the sandpaper too hard you may break the wire. Also, some magnet wire insulation is designed to melt off in a solder pot, so you may be able to solder through the insulation. This takes a special insulation though, your wire may not have it. I just burn it off with a lighter then wipe the soot off with my fingers. Brett |

when I tried putting a match or lighter to some #42 gauge wire it just melted as it,s so thin. I like the idea of submerging it first in solder to char the enamal and then with some very fine sandpaper gently sanding it as discribed above. The lighter works best with thicker wire. |
