It calls it a 1963 SG Special, stating that the SG body style replaced the earlier Special in 1961.

The "earlier Special" is probably referring to the Les Paul Special... But I've been wrong before (in this very thread!) so don't quote me on that.

P.S. I still consider the LP SG's to be more like an SG than an LP.   ;)   I guess that it was in 1963 that Gibson stopped using the Les Paul name... I need to look that up in one of the books at my local music store (GC is starting to blisterwrap their books so no more free looks!)

And now, a word from our sponsors:

Jay,
They beefed up the neck joint on those "Historically accurate" ones, because the original neck joint is a failure waiting to happen. They didn't want the guitars falling apart. Can't say I blame them, but technically they're not 100% historically accurate.

Re:back to the joint
Peter,

I've seen more than one with a cracked
neck. Real shame. I think a lot of them
got dropped. Like I said earlier, no
straploks then, and of course they are headstock
heavy. I've always wondered about a sandwich
version: same mahogany thickness, with a
quarter inch piece of maple on top. It might
balance better and be a little brighter.

That describes the mid-'70's Ibanez Artist I used to have --TOO bright, imho, I always wanted it to sound more like an SG!
