Enclosure idea
Damn this is a fun thread!

My wife found a little aluminum make-up box at Shopko (sorta like k-mart) for my niece. Think metal Pignose! It is ALL metal construction, riveted together, chrome corner covers and handle, and lined with nice grey velour. It came with make up and crap in it and it only cost $3.74!

Cut a whole in the top, slap in the speaker and circuit! It is big enough for 8 'D' cells and a 4+ inch speaker. I've seen similar boxes at Target and other places - look in kid's make up..

Oh my God! Did I just mention make-up on Ampage?!!

Did I mention it was only $3.74?

I gotta buy my niece a new present....

I mounted mine in a cardboard box. It has a 6" Alnico magnet speaker! It dosen't sound too good with humbuckers, but with single coils this thing rocks!

P.S. I have played for several HOURS without changing a battery yet!

Isn't it called Smokey, beceause you can put it in a cigarette box? Is this a commercialy used circuit? I remember seeing something like that in a catalogue. I think i'm gonna make one today. I'm interested, how will it sound. I've got the mini marshall, and it sounds pretty good. Unfortunatelly, i've lend it to our bass player for practicing in his apartment. I hope it doesn't suffer too much!

Yeah, actually there is a commercial product called the Smokey Amp, and the company will (or at least used to) sell them in cigarette boxes. The real enclosure is a translucent plastic box with the little mylar speaker built in.

You can go to National Semiconductor's Website and download the LM386 specs. It is in .pdf format and has a circuit almost identical to the Smokey. It has several other options too.;) I found the site by going to Yahoo and typing LM386 into the search engine.

Re: Enclosure idea/mini amp
hey all you circut wizards. whats a lm386? i have a set of computer speakers that seem like they would be a good starting point. they have what seems to be areally decent speaker, on/off switch, tone and volume controls, 12v dc input. i would like to build one of these amps for kicks. i'm no electronics guru,( not even close) but can follow instructions well. and i can operate a solder iron. enlightenment would be greatly appreciated. thanks a ton Joe

A LM386 is an 8 pin chip that you can get at Radio Shack, it's an amplifier delivering .4 watts to an 8 Ohm speaker. It requires a 9V battery, Alkaline is best. Do you have the schematic yet?
