My amp

The most fun of all is guitar > direct box > PA. The whole system becomes your monster guitar amp, and you don't have to carry a freakin' thing!

The most fun is, the chuckle I get when I read uninformed things like that!

Then again, Bruce, tone is in the ear of the beholder (or something like that)... if the person likes that tone more power to them.... just thank goodness some of us have different tastes *laugh*

Bruce There's no call for such a rude, arrogant response. Nobody elected you Arbiter of Good Taste. Open your mind. (BTW anonymous was not me)

Yeah, I guess that's me.. AMPAGE'S self appointed, rude, arrogant, closed minded "Arbiter of Tone".
I like it!
Jeeze, I'm such a selfish bastard.
But even though I'm just messin', I do think playing an electric guitar direct through a PA sucks!
I bet you do too, so....please, have some fun at my expense.

Back in my first band in high school we pooled all of our money and bought a (gasp) peavey 8 channel powered mixer and two SP-2s. I had a peavey bandit that had (to me) the most god-awful overdriven guitar tone. I hated and refused to let anyone mic the amp, and stopped using it all together, instead choosing to go direct to the board through a Dod American Metal pedal, as the other guitarist, bassist and singer already were doing.
Of course there's no playing dynamics or sensitivity, and the tone was a sterile Nine Inch Nails or Ministry grind, but that's what I wanted in 1986, and that would haved sounded so much better to me then than any "classic" amp, boutique or vintage.
Now I go for a different tone, but a million other things have also changed and my preference then would be just as valid today, if it was what I wanted. I don't feel compelled to lord my experience in everyone's face, and that's what the previous poster was getting at, in my opinion.
Regards,
John

Hey Bruce, sorry if I came down a little too hard on you. The cool thing about being self appointed is you don't have to pander to those pesky voters!{:-)

I agree with you the direct to board sound sucks, but some of those amp simulators sound surprisingly good and I doubt the audience knows the difference.
I've often thought how cool it would be to be able to walk into a gig with just a guitar in one hand and a do-it-all wonder box in the other. Oh well I'm starting to babble.
Cheers
