randy removing wood from stat for different tone?
Someone told me he routed out the wood from under his strat's pickgaurd(the entire pickgaurd!)and the chamber it created made the guitar sound alot different. He said"less bass and treble;more boxy sounding and midrangy"Has anyone ever tried something like this?and what did it sound like? Thanks.

Uuuuuh, I'd try a different pickup if you don't like the sound of your strat before I'd go routing it up.

Well, not if it's a cheap copy... I read an article in GP some years ago about a guy who did the same thing - Mooney? I forget. There was a Dan Erlewine article about it, where they discussed his mods to his Strats. He also uses bone and wooden bridge saddles and plays !!! .016-.064 !!! strings.

A Strat with a universal rout does indeed sound different than one with a regular body.

Why would anyone WANT to change the tone of a strat?!

I have a buddy of mine who took his Harmony Strat copy and did exactly the same thing. It didn't sound more midrangey though. It took on MUCH more bass and treble. It was a definite improvement, but the guitar sounded good to start out with. Thinline Tele sound familiar?
