General Essential Listening
OK, so my listening material has stagnated. I, like most of us here I suspect, am always on the lookout for new guitarcentric recordings that DON'T suck. So, given the success of the RF/LC essential listening thread, I thought it educational to post at most 5 releases that we consider essential listening for guitarists....and maybe just great music overall. This is not a debate, but a means to broaden our palates. I will go first, in no particular order:

1) Scott Henderson "Dog Party" killer blues without cliche.
2) ZZ Top "Rio Grande Mud" plenty of exceedingly tasty work
3) Steve Morse "Coast to Coast" wide diversity, top drawer
4) Allman Bros "At the Fillmore" nuff said
5) Steve Vai "Alien Love Secrets" quite soulful

Well, I'll add one; "Secrets" by Allan Holdsworth. Especially the cut "Joshua". Another great Holdsworth album, more accesible, is Metal Fatigue. There are lots of accomplished players, Holdsworth sounds like he is from another planet.

Other "accessible" material featuring Allan Holdsworth

Bundles - Soft Machine
Two of a Kind - Bill Brufford
Tony Williams Lifetime
Enigmatic Ocean - Jean Luc Ponty

Not so accessible: None Too Soon, with AH playing jazz tunes.

Here are some that have inspired me. Not really in the classic rock vein, but some very pretty electric guitar work.
Luna - "Penthouse"
Daniel Lanois - "For the Beauty of Winona"
Yo La Tengo - "Electropura"
Grant Lee Buffalo "Fuzzy" and "Mighty Joe Moon"

Does anyone know offhand the name of the release (i believe it was Tony Williams'(drummer)album that had Holdsworth guesting on guitar?

AH was the guitar player on Tony Williams' band (Lifetime). He recorded two albums with them. The two albums were released as a single CD. Look for Tony Williams' Lifetime.
