Homebrew Cabs
I was starting the search for the right speakers for a Silvertone 1484 (Twin Twelve) head.
What would be a good 1x15" cab to model a homebrew after? Are there any designs using a 15" and another (smaller) size speaker that sound good? What would combining a 15 and a 10 be like?
Any info is appreciated.

John,

There are any number of different cabinet designs you could use. I personally have two different ones that I use for closed back cabinets that I make. The first is to simply copy the dimensions of the Bassman cabinet (Small twin 12) and make a single 15" baffle. The second is an old JBL cabinet dimension book that I use that has similar designs to the Fender, but they are deeper and have rectangular ports. I use a large twin 12" that is outstanding. I't large enough for two 15's as well. There are two basic cabinet sizes and several bafflr board configurations.

If you're interested, e-mail me your address and I'll snail mail you a photocopy of the book.

You should scan that book and ask Chris H to post it on the AX84 site...

One thing I haven't seen anywhere but in the old Valcos is combining different speaker sizes in cabinets. I wasn't necessarily thinking about crossovers and the like, but it would seem you would get the best of each size. Or would you end up magnifying the weakness of each size?

Why use different size speakers in different cabinets? For example, take a typical bass rig running a 1x15 and a 4x10, now it's easy for me to see the advantages of having smaller things to move, store, and gig with, but is there anything wrong with say a 15" and two ten inchers? What about combining 10s and 12s? Has anyone ever done this?

As a gigging bass player three or four years ago, I stooped using my SVT cab in favor of a 2x10 and a 1x15 cab. It lets yyou get the deep lows of the 15 and the punchy midrange of the SVT style cab, but it's modular.

My rig now (for guitar) is an old accordian amp with a 12 and an 8. Each speaker is in a separate sealed compartment in the combo cab, and each speaker is driven by a pair of 7591s. Pretty neat sound actually.

Gibson also used all kinds of different variations on this theme. I don't dig multiple speakers in one cabinet, but I use combinations of different speaker sizes (all full range) for bass frequently.

THD and Naylor have done this. 2X10 with 1X12. Haven't heard them but it is an intriguing idea.
