Gus Re: Muff Fuzz (Transistorized)
JD place a .47uf up to 47uf cap across the 2.7k resistor the lower values will boost the highs more than the lows 22uf will give a good full range fuzz. better yet replace the 2.7k with a trim pot to adjust the bias.

JD, my Sweet Cheetah fuzz is essentially a clone of this box. There are a few tweaks to the cct. to make it nice and fuzzy, but to start with, make sure you're using higher-gain NPN transistors. One other thing - try bypassing the emitter of the second transistor with a cap. I use 22uf but anything should work. Without the bypass cap, the second transistor doesn't let too much low end thru.

PS my band (that you asked about) is playing the Brewery in Raleigh NC tonight (Nov. 26)

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I have managed to get all kinds of heavy distortion out of this thing now! Now I just got to decide on how best to tune it to suit my needs. The biggest hitter, I think was jacking up the value of the resistor from the collector of the second transistor. Thanks again.

If you're talking about the one that was in a
little box with a 1/4" plug at one end, and a
jack at the other, I had one of those back in
the 70's. It did not produce a whole lot of fuzz, in
fact if you wanted a lot of distortion you had to
use a booster in front of it.

I seem to remember the ad copy saying it was supposed
to get the character of "those old r&b amps
of yesteryear" or some such. IOW, not designed to
give lots of distortion.

Thanks Steve, that helps, Since I've never heard the real thing, I didn't know if it was working correctly or not...I think I now know it's probably sounding pretty close to the way it should sound. Actually, I have the same problem with the Green Ringer I built. It sounds good, but I have no idea if it sounds like the real thing.

Yes owned one, cloned one, they all sound like shit. Like all basic distortion, to repeat, DISTORTION unites from the 60's and 70's. The EH Big Muff was a great improvment. Santans type lead tones.
Paul.
PS I have a factory schematic (70's)and the diodes are grounded.
