Good Parts source...computer power supplies.
I hope this isn't rehashing things that have been pointed out in the past but some good home brew stuff can be found in the switching supplies from computers. Since I own a computer company I have a load of old switching supplies. They sat in a box an collected dust for a while till I dug them out recently to find a couple of parts. Amoung the things I found on most of them; 600V 5-6A bridges, npn 100-150W transistors, a bunch of heat sinks, themo pads that can be used instead of grease, fuses, and inductors. The inductors don't seem to have any value markings on them so they are mostly useless though.

These parts could be useful to experimenter, so I thought I'd pass that along.

By the way, I was searching for parts for a regulated heater supply at the time...

Thanks for the tip. BTW, all my friends, family and co-workers are on alert that I accept "donations" of old tv's, stereos, tape decks etc. I rip them up, then save the circuit boards in carboard boxes. Last summer I made a Colorsound Overdriver, that cost me $9 total. Mark

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Cooling fans. These will operate very quietly from a 6V DC filement supply. Hum, the more I think about it, I think a whole filement supply may be able to be built out of the switcher except for the transformer. The only thing I need is a regulator, and the swithcers only have 7905 (negative) units in them. I'll have to think of something. Anyone else?

Anyone know a reason why you CAN'T run valve heaters off -5VDC? I would think they'd run just as well off either polarity, since you can run them off a center-tapped AC supply. I usually use 7805s b/c I have lots of old one lying around but why wouldn't a 7905 work just as well???

Never even thought of that! It should work just fine. Now to check on wheater you can use a fixed regulator as an adjustable unit. Wonder if it would work. Rasing it up to 6.3V using the same method used for adjustable units would be easy, if it works...
