Telefunken 12AX7 tubes... I got a handful of these grey-plate Tele's at a flea market t-day...are these pre-amp tubes good in "HI-GAIN" type amp curcuits...or...are they better suited in "clean" HI-FI amps?...Frank...also came across a MADE IN JAPAN 5AR4/GZ-34...how are these rectifier tubes rated? |

FJ, From what I've heard, those Telefunkens have a slightly lower mu than a normal American 12AX7, and are prized by the hifi set. I'd certainly plug 'em into your favourite amp and see how you like 'em. Good score... ... Whit |

| John Stokes | There's two types of Telefunkens. Flat-plate and ribbed-plate. Which one you get? FWIW, the flat-plate versions have a bit more "snob appeal", and have gain as high as just about anything else. The Japanese 5AR4 is probably a copy of the old Mullard. They're very good. |

Beware -- I've seen a Japanese tube labeled 5AR4/GZ34 that was really only a 5Y3. I think it was rebranded as "National". |
