Telefunken 12AX7 tubes...
I got a handful of these grey-plate Tele's at a flea market t-day...are these pre-amp tubes good in "HI-GAIN" type amp curcuits...or...are they better suited in "clean" HI-FI amps?...Frank...also came across a MADE IN JAPAN 5AR4/GZ-34...how are these rectifier tubes rated?

FJ,

From what I've heard, those Telefunkens have a slightly lower mu than a normal American 12AX7, and are prized by the hifi set. I'd certainly plug 'em into your favourite amp and see how you like 'em. Good score...

There's two types of Telefunkens. Flat-plate and ribbed-plate. Which one you get? FWIW, the flat-plate versions have a bit more "snob appeal", and have gain as high as just about anything else.

The Japanese 5AR4 is probably a copy of the old Mullard. They're very good.

Beware -- I've seen a Japanese tube labeled 5AR4/GZ34 that was really only a 5Y3. I think it was rebranded as "National".
