If you want to hear some really interesting blues-ish playing by EVH, try to scrounge up a recording called the Starfleet Project with Brian May. Not exactly the greatest blues stuff in the world but there's a few really tasty jams with Brian where the two of them are just trading riffs for a good 10 or 12 minutes.

I also noticed that Dave Funk favoured 3.3ks in his book,,  
,man, its just different cathode value.
