Hoffman circut boards
Looking for comments/criticisms on the Hoffman replacement circut boards, especially the Plexi and Bassman boards. On goes the quest for "the tone".

Hi Scott;

I have recently been to the Hoffman site, and from what I can tell and what others have said, he's got some quality products and I think it was Gil who highly recomended the hoffman transformers and the circuit boards look good on the web page, the only thing I might be concerned about is the components on the ready to go boards, if you don't need orange drop caps or carbon comp resistors, they are probably a real bargain.

I've gotten lots of stuff from Doug and he is a great guy to deal with and always ready to help. I haven't gotten a completed board from him but I have wired my own with a blank board from him. His turret boards are put together well and very easy to work on. On his prewired boards he uses carbon comps in the signal chain and Xicon polypropylene caps(which I prefer), but will put whatever you want on them. He's told me that on his own stuff he uses metal film resistors but uses CC's on the boards because this is what most people want. I just finished a homebrew amp with one of his 50 watt output trannies and I'm very happy with it. Mark

HI Mark

do you know how much a ab763 (twin type) board would cost without the components?

Thanks Ed

Hi Ed, not sure about the AB763 but a bassman or plexi board, turrets installed with wire connectors is $60. If you don't have a drill press to install the turrets this is a good way to go.

    There were many threads on building turret boards "on the cheap" stashed away in the archives here (not accessible yet as far as I know). I believe that an inexpensive "staking" tool can be built with just a nut, a screw, and a few washers. But I guess a drill press would help in drilling out the thicker epoxy boards...

Steve, Doug uses a drill press to set the turrets actually after drilling the holes. Mark
