Re: Customers listening too critically & imagining noises in repaired amps - what to call that phenomenon? while we're way off topic, anyone see Jeff "The Skunk" Baxter is running for political office, and (I think) as a Republican.. |

What is worse, is that old amps can have several separate and distinct faults (hum, noisey pots, valve blown) & the customer only notices (and will pay for) the most obvious one. I guess everyone has fixed the 'wrong' fault sometime. |

Something I've caught myself doing: standing directly in front of the amp listening (oh my is that a Strat I'm holding). Coustmers tend to do the same thing. Their anxious to hear how much better their amp sounds. G.Weber points out that the noise created by the amp is what you hear with nothing plugged into it. Personal hell story: The famous player who couldn't live with the "noise" from his DR. He plays it on ten with a 50's Tele, yet dosen't want to spring for tubes....what can you say! |

What is worse, is that old amps can have several separate and distinct faults (hum, noisey pots, valve blown) & the customer only notices Good point. My amp (hifi) is cutting out intemittently, and I couldnīt find it. Repairperson says thereīs nothing wrong, because the amp worked just fine for hours in his shop. Two days later; boom, cut out again. Finally narrowed it down to a speaker-protection circuit with a mind of itīs own (Hey, Iīm bored, letīs protect the speaker from absolutely nothing!) |

....notices the most obvious one I shouldnīt read so damn fast. Point still stands tough. |
