| John K. | Trace-Speed-anyone--start with tone stack? OK. First, thank you Trace and Speed for the reply. I have two major problems with the tone stack on this amp. 1. As you turn the pots for bass, mid, treble from lowest to highest they do almost nothing. The person that wants to remove the -fb loop claims doing so will remove this problem. He claims the -fb is "choking" the EQ. 2. The overall sound (which is always pretty much the same, since the pots do almost nothing) is what some people describe as the "icepick through your forehead" sound. No bottom, shrill screaming high midrange and treble. Why would the Eq pots do almost nothing? I don't think there is a problem with the power stage. I plug a preamp into the fx return, and those Eq knobs respond. Plenty of bass, mid and treble range. Trace - I e-mailed Soldano a number of days ago requesting info from their tech dept. on how to get a schematic for the HR50. No response yet, but if I ever do manage to get one, I'll certainly get you a copy. Thanks, guys. Let me know what you think about my "mystery" tone stack. |

Sounds like the path through the slope resistor is open, due to a bad resistor or weak solder connection. Try jumpering a 100k resistor across the existing component, and check for fuller tone. |

| SpeedRacer | The -fb loop has nothing to do with the tone stack; it just works around the output stage and unless you put filters in the loop, there is no net "eq", in fact the opposite. It tries to create a flatter freq response. I think Doc's solution is much more like it. The wiring of the tone-stack is off so that all the signal is routing through the treble cap.. that would do it! I'd bet he's dead on. |

~~~The person that wants to remove the -fb loop claims doing so will remove this problem. He claims the -fb is "choking" the EQ. @@@ Well...I guess that could be. I've never really had that sort of problem before myself. Mybe someone else has run into this? 2. The overall sound (which is always pretty much the same, since the pots do almost nothing) is what some people describe as the "icepick through your forehead" sound. No bottom, shrill screaming high midrange and treble. @@@ The good news is this should be able to be changed. I don't see why you couldn't make this more pleasing to your ear. It' sno fun playing with an "Ice Pick." ~~~Trace - I e-mailed Soldano a number of days ago requesting info from their tech dept. on how to get a schematic for the HR50. No response yet, but if I ever do manage to get one, I'll certainly get you a copy. @@@ Ok, great! Just email it to me when you get a copy unless someone knows where one would be posted?? Chow for now; Trace |
| anonymous | Trace, why don't you offer some real technical advice instead of repeating the problem and giving a fluffy answer? |
| anonymous | ~~~Trace, why don't you offer some real technical advice instead of repeating the problem and giving a fluffy answer? @@@ I didn't really think my reply was all that hostile to be honest with you. I didn't think I was repeating the question and if I was I apologize. I had replied in a different thread, I believe it was the same amp, and I said I woud more than happy to help in any way I could if someone had a schematic (which I do not have) Also he posted me name so I though it best to reply rather than not repling which could have been mistaken for "ignoring" the post. Speed seemed to have some good ideas! (nice going Speed! Sincerest apologies; Trace |
| John K. | Well said, Trace I found your response considerate and logical. I am puzzled over someone being "anonymous" on a page like this to begin with, and attacking someone for the way they responded to MY request to answer MY question is even more strange. Since I believe this page should only be used for the exchange of technical ideas and help, I will not be responding to any post of this nature in the future. |
