Bill S Clicking in Boss Phasor and Small Stone!

Anyone know what the problem could be with these effects, there is a "clicking" sound, when you increase the rate controls, the clicking also increases.

What gives?

The Low Frequency Oscillator (LFO) is bleeding into the

audio path. This is probably because either the batteries are getting low (and therefore high internal impedance) or the electrolytic capacitors that bypass the power supply inside are getting old and therefore high impedance.

If they were mine, I would first replace the electrolyitic capacitors.

Hi, Bill. I had a clicking problem on my pedalboard; it turned out that the Small Stone was passing clock noise through the common DC power supply to a Boss CS2 chorus on the same pedalboard. I had to add a RC filter to the inside of the CS2 to get rid of the noise. The clicking was present all the time, even when all effects were off. The CS2 I have has been very intolerant of power supply noise but works fine otherwise. Hope this helps!

One of the old 70's? Small stone I worked on had NO P/S caps the ticking is caused by the wire lay out the fix that works the best seems to be to add a good electrolyic >47uf across one of the ICs in the middle of the board or across the osc IC. What is happening is that the osc is inducing a current surge into the P/S and a wire/IC is picking up the edge you know the good stuff rate of change(differentiator)look in THE ART OF ELECTRONICS for a good write up. When ever any thing changes state in a electronic circuit look out FWIW most cheap power supplys work better sourcing current than sinking current so you can "trick" them into working better by loading them down with a resistor/resistor leds if you need some light on stage, if your power supply can take it(shunt load). If your effects draw say 50ma add a resistor(s) across the P/S to load it with 50ma more with the resistor. Also if remember correctly the LM317 starts to regulate its best at >100ma load. R.G. Dave Stork any comments please.
