O'connor books
I haven't looked at their book list lately, but I got my copy from Antique Electronic Supply.

I bought Tonnes of Tone and the 2 Ultimate Tone books fom Antique Radio. Those 3 books are great resources.

Re: O'connor books/mistakes & corrections?
Got mine from Antique Electronics Supply also. I'm sure they still have it.

Seems in other previous posts there was talk about nearly all recent books having some mistakes like in technical as far as I understand (not worried about typos). Has anyone detected any mistakes in any of O'Connor's books? If so how's about passing on the corrections or better yet maybe O'Connor can post them on his web page. Just want to get it right. T.B.

O'Connor's tone stack cap values in his Fender diagrams are different than Fenders. (Oh, the horror, I burned his books when I found this blasphemy. Why do we allow this man to live?)

Kevin's books are my favorite 'red light' reading.

Well, Steve, if that's all the technical "errors" in the book then I can live with that. Not a problem. I've got two of O'connors books and have enjoyed working my way through them. Mr. O'Connor has set to print a lot of valuable and useful information.

My thing is that since there are so many "pros" on these boards, if mistakes are discovered in any of the books currently available, it sure would be nice to have the corrections made known. Take care, T.B.

There are a couple of errors I have noticed in TUT vol 1.

1. The calculations for the 3db down point for interstage RC circuits. While the correct formula is given, the method for deriving the equivalent resistance is way off, and thus the 3db down points are off by about a factor of 10.

2. Some of the discussions on a tube's transconductance are either confusing or incorrect.

There's a few other nit-picky things, typos, etc. but the positives massively outweigh the negatives.

I also have "Valve Amplifiers" by Morgan Jones, and "Valve and Transistor Audio Amplifiers" by John Linsley Hood. These are hi-fi books and do not even mention guitar amps, but have great technical information. Basically, O'connor took the info in these books and the infamous Radiotron Designers Handbook and tried to present them in a praactical way to the guitar amp tech/designer. So he "watered down" the theory a bit.

If you've ever seen the RDH, you can see what I mean. Not exactly light and breezy reading. It needs watering down!

Hi Mike,

I appreciate your post, well put. If you care to elaborate on the method for deriving the equivalent resistance I'm all ears. Or can you point me to another book that shows an example correctly. BTW I do own a copy of the RDH book 4th edition and it is some heavy reading. I need to plow through it one day, I've only skimmed the book so far.

Would you recommend the Morgan Jones book "Valve Amplifiers" anyway? If there is some good information to be had that could be put to use in more of a design nature or to further understand tubes and circuits in general then I'm all for it.

Thanks again, take care, T.B.
