Well, in theory "yes" it would hurt it's value. Recording engineers are WAYYYYY anal about things like that! (ha, ha) I would say leave it as is if it were me. :)

I personally like those compressors. Who gave it to you?
Ohhhh...the other thing is that the bottom is dropping out of the market on the 1176's and LA-2A's because they were reissued and sound pretty amazing.

I don't know about their transistor sockets but UREI used some terrible IC sockets in their EQ's, X-Overs and other devices. I replace them with newer low-profile sockets whenever I find them. The original sockets are rather tall and don't have much of a grip on the IC pins. Many intermittent problems have been solved by replacing them.

On the topic..
check out Eddie Ciletti's page (on my links page) for a great "how they work" article specifically on the LA-2a and sim circuits (tube & SS). There are a couple links with schems for them as well as parts sources to DIY one of these. The RI is over $3k, if I read the webpage right.. (ouch!)

ps: you can get the LA2a schem for free on other sites (email me if you have trouble and I'll do the heavy lifting. ;-)

does anyone know the relationship of the T4B to the circuit? I would love to know what it is so that i dont have to pay the 150$ just for that part i mean it should only cost about 5 bucks to make if you do it right? Any help would be appreciated

The opto coupler *IS* the circuit.. well, that's an eggageration, but it's key to how well the thing works and there is no known substitute part. Keep in mind that the real (and RI) units go for $3,000 or thereabouts, and $160 looks cheap. I think you could build one of these for under $600, incl Jensen trannies etc. (It's on my "to do" list!!)
Read the article "how they work" on Eddie's page. (link on Carlo's reply)
