| LOU | Tung Oil finnish on guitar and neck Hey all! I just put a tung oil finish on a stained tele body and neck. Looks great but once the finish sets up can I use a paste wax or car wax to protect the finish a bit. Any sugestions taken. Cheers Lou |

The thing about oil finishes that I enjoy is that they are easy to touch-up. There is no surface film to worry about or feather so scratches disappear with a new coat of oil. The new oil won't work if wax is applied so if it were me I would'nt. |

I refinish a lot of antiques with wax, and one thing I do know is that wax and oil DO NOT mix that well. I occasionally oil a piece, then wait a few days before applying wax finish coats. This works well, and provides a nice lustre... But, I do not apply any oil after a waxing because the oil eats into the wax finish, resulting in a disgusting, tacky mess! I would just stick with the tung oil. This way, touch-ups are easy to perform! Also, you may want to check out the MinWax line (available at most hardware stores). There is likely something that will polish well, and be oil-based. Regards, Glen H. |
