RUSTED GUITAR FINISH
Actually, this is somthing I'm _trying_ to achieve. I saw a pic of a James Trussart Tele with a "rusted" finish. The guitar looked like it had been sitting in a junkyard leaning against a car for twenty years. Anybody know a good "fake rust" spray or process? I'm leaning towards making the a steel body front, but don't really want the weight... The tone, maybe, but the weight, no. I've seen references to "rust" products in some model-making books, but can't seem to find anything like that in real life.

Thanks, guys.

I don't know of a product but I had a thought place some steel parts in warm water and let them rust boil the water rust mix down to a good thickness and then spray on the body

How about making a sort of metalflake spray paint, but instead of glitter flakes, use iron powder. If you spray this powder mixed in a water based clear (StewMac catalog), the moisture will tend to rust the iron over a period of time. Be aware that iron oxide takes up about twice the space (volume) as pure iron, so don't spray it on thick. You could use actual iron oxide particles, like that in recording tape, but I think that's the pigment in brown primer anyway. Many special effects can be created using multiple shading layers and an air brush. I mean, if they can make paint look like flesh or chrome, they can surely make it look like rust stains.

I have a candy apple red TexMex strat, built 3 years ago. It had developed a blotchy look under the transparent red layer. I surmised that the aluminum or bronze flake that was used in the metallic undercoating was contaminated with moisture, either before it was mixed into the clear, or it was sprayed with air that was not dry. Over a period of 2 years, the undercoating had tarnished. This was beneath color and clear coats of sealed poly paint!

I actually found a product last night after I posted here. I'll dig up the URL later (I just upgraded my computer and don't have anything in the right plce yet (: )

It's called "Instant Rust," and it goes along with a product called "Instant Iron." Looks like the right deal.

Thanks, guys
