LP Gold Top? I'm looking to buy a Les Paul Deluxe Gold Top; don't want to spend more than 2G's, around 1500 preferably. Any hints on what years I might be able to find in that price range and in decent to good condition? Thanks. |

D, Good luck on that one. Does it HAVE to be a "GoldTop". A Gibson "Deluxe" of any kind will command more $$$. A Goldtop Gibson Deluxe, whenever that was made, will probably be even more. If ya wanna play, a Standard won't embarrass you, and you can probably find one in good shape for $1500, or less. If it's for looks, or collectability, ya gotta be willing to pay, or pray. Not being mean, but we all want a Goldtop for $1500. (If I'm wrong...slam me...I can take it. I just never saw one for that cheap). Brad |

I know, I sound kinda greedy here. So a Standard would probably be fine. I'm not really intersted in getting a guitar that has significant collectable or rarity value. I would like good playing and good sounding Les Paul, and I like the look of the gold top. Considering all the reissues, I was thinking that there has to be a LP GT out there to be had for that price range(up to $2000). Am I wrong? Maybe my Gibson ignorance is showing, cause I don't know a whole lot about gibsons. Can someone enlighten me about the different issues and reissues of Gold Tops .... what they usually go for and availability. Thanks a bunch! dave Can anyone give me a brief run-down on which I don;lt know a whole lot about Gibsons decent reissue out there in the $1500 to $2000 range. I don;t know a whole lot about Gibsons, like which models were |

I currently own a Gibson lespaul 30th Anniversary Goldtop Standard with 30th Anniversary inscribed on the 19th fret. It was a custom shop manufactured model back in 1986. Apparently, It is a replica ogf the 1956' goldtop. It has stock 57' humbuckers sweet as can be especially the neck bucker sounds like Warren Haynes Leas Paul whe he was with the Allman Bothers Band. Machine heads are the keystone old fashoned button syle made to look like ivory, but obviously isn't. Tune omatic bride and stop tail piece. No p90's here. No trapeze tailpiece either. Has beautiful Mahogany neck and back, Deepdisk Maple top with cream Binding and Indian Rosewood Neck. Rae to find that today. Brazilian is best,(most MUSICAL, tHEN Indian etc. Guitar weighs about 9.5 lbs very Heavy. But Once you have played this baby, It is well worth the weight/wait. I only paid $868.00 for it, the store went out of business on west 48th st. In manhattan's Music District. According to Gibson's Book value chart, It goes for 1250-1600 us dollars. To me, It is worth Thousands. I have gotten a little tired of the Gold wearing off and turning Green, over the right arm area. But experts tell me that the "Gold" is actually a bronze powder that is difficult to get replicated since it does not belong to Gibson but a third party unreveiled. Anyway, I am sure you would love this ax but it is not up for sale. Good luck in youe endeavors For a Gold top. Best Regards, Mike s. |

The deluxe came out in '68 the first time, I think. A few had P90's, but most had small humbuckers (common on epiphones). The standard had the regular humbuckers. The deluxes are generall LESS expensive than the standards, because most people want LPs with full-size buckers. Around here (the great Northwest), the deluxes can be had under 1500. Actually, I have one that has P90s, but also came with a set of small 'buckers. Don't know which are the originals, and bought the guitar in the early 70s. I really like the P90s myself, but if you buy one from this era and it comes with nylon bridge pieces, do yourself a favor and replace them with metal. You'll be happy you did. |

Oh yeah, as someone else notes later here, stay away from the pancake body mid 70s ones. The 68-70 ones (or at least mine) has a two layer body (mahogony and maple, just like God intended), but a 3 piece neck. Supposedly the 3 pice neck is not a good thing, but I've never played one I like any better. The best bet is play before you pay. |

I believe just about ANY Les Paul made during most of the 1970s has the dreaded pancake-style body. |
