Fender Bass VI???
What is/was the Fender Bass VI? Six string bass, or guitar with two extra low end strings? How does it differ from a baritone guitar? Sorry for the nievete, but i'm really curious.

The Bass VI was Fenders short-scale 6-string bass. Pretty much the same short-scale neck used on the Mustang Basses, but with 6 strings crammed on (made things tight). It's scale is slightly longer than some baritones (30" as opposed to around 28" or so) and it's tuned down a full octave from a guitar, where as a Baritone is just tuned down a Fifth.

Jack Bruce often used one with Cream (Bruce seemed to prefer short-scale 6-string basses, he also used the Dano Long Horn), Tom Petty's music often features one, but The Cure are probably the best at mixing it into their sound.

The last time it was made was in a Japanese import version that can now command more than they sold for new, if you can find one. And originals are usually in the $2,000 range.

They are a great instrument. And they are a wonderful 'parts' instrument in the studio. Mine plays in tune all the way up the neck and I love it for chord thickening. And where would Sam Cooke be without one?
