pickups used on vintage SG's I would like to know which pickups (model, reference#...) where installed on old SG's? Are there nowadays any real good replacements for those p/u's that would fit right in? Thanks. |

...well, I have a 1972 SG Special with big old "soap bar" P90s. I've never researched replacement pick ups for the beast. Later, Dave James |

On second thought, the Gibson Blueshawk B90s should drop right in (yes, that's "B" as in "Baker"). They do have a different tone being a humbucking/dummy coil arrangement, but sound good anyway. Later, Dave James |

So, those pickups with the chrome cover are P90's... I see. Are they the same they where on the LesPauls from that era? I think I remember they were externally the same. I say this because in that case, I know a shop that sells them, Gibson product. Not vintage, new made. Anybody has tried these? Similar sound to the vintage ones? I like the way the old ones overdrive the amp... but I'm afraid they must be hard to find nowadays. Thanks again. jc |

P90s usually have black plastic covers. You might seem them in white from time to time. The chrome covered guys are humbuckers of some sort. The circa 72 SG I referenced was a little odd in that it had P90s instead of the more typical humbuckers. I believe current SG's use humbuckers exclusively . Later, Dave James |

P-90 pickups had chrome covers in the dog ear form factor. As soap bars they were cream or black plastic. SG specials at one time were exclusively outfitted with p-90's now they have exposed humbuckers(no cover). |

Re: pickups used on vintage SG's (PAF's?) Lot of questions now... I have been searching for info on the net. What I'm looking for is for what it is called PAF's humbuckers. They're expensive Q1.: How could they be "alnicos" if there where no visible pole pieces, just six bolt nuts? Q2.: About what year did they have to be manufactured to be considered real PAF's (and deliver "that" tone?) Q3.: If the new made '57 Classic Gibson HB's are "exact" replicas, even if the alnico is not naturaly aged, I presume they must sound nicely. Similar in difference like between pu's in an American Standard and older alnico start pickups, I guess. Am I right? jc |
