The fret tangs can be thinned but first you'd have to take them all out. It's not exactly a quickie job as I understand it (I haven't done it.)

Fender now lists (in their Frontline catalog) packs of pre-cut fret wire, with medium-jumbo profile and 9.5" radius (basically, their Am Std wire). You could order a pack from your favorite Fender dealer. With a minimum of specialized hand tools you could carefully pull out those fat frets and replace them with the Am Std stuff. Put it back to stock, and the bow will disappear. You might still get the StewMac shop series book on Fretwork, to get a good feel for all that might be involved.

One thing to be wary of while pulling the frets; did the guy glue the frets in during the refret? They may not pull out very easily if he did. You may need to use a soldering iron to heat the frets before pulling them if they are glued. The Dan Erlewine Guitar Player repair guide listed in this thread has some great info on fretwork, along with others here I highly recommend it. I have a copy and it is irreplacable!

The worry would be, did the fret slots get widened by the use of fatter-tanged wire? In which case they might not hold the new wire properly.
